When discussing lasers, we talk about the wavelength of the light that is emitted from the laser and the length of the pulse of light. These two things determine which elements in the skin can be targeted. The Picosure laser delivers pulses of laser light in picoseconds; one trillionth of a second. Prior to the arrival of picosecond technology, the most advanced lasers used nanosecond technology, with laser pulses in one billionth of a second. The issue with a lot of older laser technology, and even nanosecond technology, is that it relied on a photothermal effect (photo meaning light and thermal meaning heat). This meant that the target tissue and surrounding tissues were subject to heat, which was needed as part of the treatment but could also result in burns, scarring and an increased risk in pigmentation changes.
Picosecond technology, however, uses a photomechanical effect; this means that at one trillionth of a second, the laser pulses are so short that the tissue does not have time to heat up. Instead, the target, whether it be tattoo ink or skin pigment, is shattered into tiny particles and the body then clears these particles through the lymphatic system. There is very little heating effect so the risks of burning, scarring and long term pigmentation changes are drastically reduced compared to older laser technology.
Tattoo Removal - all colours treated!
As the number of individuals with tattoos has increased, so has the need for improved tattoo removal methods. Tattoo removal methods have evolved from potentially harmful treatments that often had painful and sometimes permanent side effects to less harmful methods with good results. Until the introduction of laser tattoo removal, people resorted to tattoo removal methods such as acid treatments, surgical excision, and dermabrasion.
Until the launch of PicoSure, Q-Switched lasers had been considered the gold standard for removing tattoos. Q-switched laser treatments use thermal energy to heat up and break apart the ink particles. Now with PicoSure, ultra-short pulses (one trillionth of a second in length!) hit the ink particle with a pressure so great, the ink shatters into tiny dust-like particles. Because the particles are so small, they are more readily absorbed and eliminated by the body. This can mean better clearance of the tattoo and less treatments overall!
